What is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination
Avid adj.: enthusiastic; ardent; characterized by vigorous pursuit [L avidus, eager for knowledge]
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. Our AVID program places special emphasis on WICOR: writing, inquiry/critical thinking, teamwork/collaboration, organization and reading skills.
What is WICOR?
AVID WICOR strategies are used in all secondary classrooms in East Irondequoit. Below is a description of WICOR and the picture outlines examples of each strategy that would be used in the classroom.
W=Writing: Using writing for communication and deeper learning
I=Inquiry: Going deeper than is what is understood to make connections
C=Collaboration: Learning and working with peers for deeper understanding
O=Organization: Strategies that assist with time management/organization of work
R=Reading: Reading for relevance and understanding in all classes
