AI Guidelines for Responsible Use

These guidelines for responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) provide consideration for creating AI learning environments, implementing AI in student learning, protecting sensitive and confidential staff and student data, and considerations for ensuring academic integrity.  

  Agency and Human Interaction:   

  • Draft only:  Users will use AI generated content as ideas for first draft only, for feedback or evaluation, or for tips to develop an idea.  

  • Fact-checking and Review:  Users will fact-check and review AI generated content for inaccuracies.  

  • Bias reduction:   Users should review and edit any AI generated content to reduce potential bias.  AI data may reflect biases based on their training data sets.  

  • Source Verification: AI output should not be used as the sole source for any major decision-making or academic practice.  

  Sensitive and Confidential Data:  

  • Users should not input any personally identifiable, sensitive or confidential information into any AI system.    

  • Users should not use any AI system that has not been Education Law 2-d approved by the district Data Protection Officer.  

 Prompts:  Users should follow these guidelines on prompt engineering to get the most accurate results out of AI systems.  

  • Generate prompts that are clear and specific, using keywords and phrases.  

  • Check responses for accuracy.  

  • Provide contextual details to provide more accurate responses.  

  • Avoid being vague, using jargon or giving conflicting instructions.  

  • Use follow up prompts to refine the AI output.  

Academic Integrity:    

  • Educate students about academic integrity when using AI tools.  

  • Students should have clear guidance and expectations for citing AI usage.  

  • Clearly identify in what situations generative AI use is prohibited or permitted.  

AI Use Cases:    

  • AI use should be purpose driven.  

  • AI use should be human-centered.  

Disclosure and Transparency:   

  • AI generated content should be labeled as such, along with the details of its review and editing process.
