FAQs About AI Literacy:
What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think and act like humans. These machines are designed to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making and language translation.
How does AI work?
AI works by using algorithms and data to enable machines to learn from experience, adjust to new inputs, and perform human-like tasks. There are different approaches to AI, including machine learning, where machines learn from data and deep learning, which involves neural networks inspired by the human brain.
What are some examples of AI?
Examples of AI include virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, self-driving cars, recommendation systems used by companies like Netflix and Amazon and facial recognition technology. AI is also used in industries like healthcare, finance and manufacturing to improve efficiency and decision-making.
What is AI Literacy?
AI Literacy refers to understanding how artificial intelligence (AI) works and using it responsibly. This includes knowing how to use AI tools, like generative AI, in a way that benefits us and avoids potential risks.
Why is AI Literacy important?
AI is becoming more common in our lives, including in education. Being AI literate helps us use these tools effectively and ethically. It also prepares us for a future where AI will play a bigger role in many industries.
What are generative AI tools?
Generative AI tools, like Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini, and DALL-E, can create new content, such as text, images, or music, based on patterns they've learned. They do this through machine learning, where computers learn from data without being specifically programmed for a task.
How can generative AI tools be used in education?
Generative AI tools can help in many ways, such as creating study materials, generating ideas for projects or even helping students with writing tasks. While they can enhance creativity and efficiency in the learning process, it's also important for students to use AI output as a starting point or first draft.
What are the risks of using generative AI tools?
Generative AI tools can sometimes produce inaccurate, misleading or incomplete content. This is because they are designed to predict what is right based on their training data, which may not always be accurate. Thus, it is imperative that we teach our students how to use AI tools responsibly.
How can we use generative AI tools responsibly?
To use generative AI tools responsibly, we are teaching students to understand their limitations and verify their output. Students will also learn to be mindful of privacy concerns and ensure that the content produced is appropriate, and ethical.
Who should be responsible for teaching AI Literacy?
AI Literacy will be taught at the secondary level to students by their teachers, however, parents are encouraged to learn more about AI to help ensure that their student(s) is using AI responsibly in their personal life.
How can parents and guardians support AI Literacy at home?
Parents and guardians can support AI Literacy by encouraging curiosity about technology, discussing the ethical implications of AI, and helping children critically evaluate information produced by AI tools. They can also educate themselves about the AI tools that are integrated in everyday apps that their child may be using for fun such as social media, games, and website.
Where can I learn more about AI Literacy?
Parents/caregivers can attend our Artificial Intelligence (AI) Parent Night on November 20 at 6:00pm to learn more about what the district is doing to teach our students to use AI tools safely and responsibly. They can also visit the Common Sense Media website for more information, tools and tips to help teach your student(s) how to navigate AI safely.
